Cruise control, also known as 'cruise control', is an electronic system that automatically maintains a vehicle's speed at a value pre-set by the driver. Once activated via a control usually located on the steering wheel or a dedicated stalk, the system takes control of the accelerator to maintain the chosen speed without the driver needing to keep pressure on the pedal. Particularly appreciated on long highway journeys or roads with constant speed limits, it contributes significantly to reducing driver fatigue and the stress associated with maintaining a legal speed. What is cruise control?
Cruise control is a comfort feature that has become almost essential in modern automotive engineering. Its role is simple yet vital: to automatically maintain the vehicle at a constant speed set by the driver. Once the desired speed is reached, the system is simply activated, usually via a button on the steering wheel or a dedicated stalk. The electronics then take over throttle control to maintain the pace, whether the road is flat, uphill, or downhill (within the limits of tire grip and engine power). The driver can then take their foot off the accelerator pedal, representing a considerable gain in comfort, especially on highways.
Detailed system operation
Cruise control relies on several electronic components. Wheel speed sensors continuously inform the engine control unit (ECU) of the vehicle's speed. When the driver activates the cruise control at speed X, the ECU stores this value. It then modulates fuel injection and throttle valve opening so that the speed measured by the sensors constantly matches the set speed. The driver can generally adjust this speed in small increments (+/- 1 or 2 mph/km/h) via the dedicated controls. For obvious safety reasons, the system immediately deactivates and hands full control back to the driver as soon as an action is detected on the brake or clutch pedal. A simple press of a 'cancel' or 'off' button also suspends its operation.

Not to be confused with the speed limiter

While cruise control actively maintains a speed without driver intervention on the accelerator, the limiter acts as a barrier. The driver sets a maximum speed not to be exceeded (e.g., 50 km/h or 30 mph in town). They continue to drive normally using the accelerator pedal, but the vehicle will refuse to accelerate beyond the set limit, except in the case of hard pressure on the pedal (kick-down) for an emergency maneuver. Cruise control is therefore 'active' whereas the limiter is 'passive'.
The evolution toward adaptive cruise control
Standard cruise control is the precursor to more sophisticated driver assistance systems. Its main evolution is Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which, in addition to maintaining speed, automatically manages the safety distance from the vehicle ahead using a radar or camera. Adaptive Cruise Control
Adaptive cruise control, often abbreviated as ACC, is an intelligent evolution of the standard cruise control system. Speed Limiter
The speed limiter is an essential Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that allows the driver to set a maximum speed not to be exceeded. Unlike cruise control, which maintains a constant speed, the limiter leaves full control of acceleration to the driver until the programmed limit is reached. Once the speed limit is attained, the system intervenes in engine management, typically by reducing fuel injection, to prevent the vehicle from accelerating any further via the pedal. For critical safety reasons, such as an emergency overtaking maneuver, forcefully pressing the accelerator pedal (the kick-down function) temporarily deactivates the device.
