The story of Quattro began in 1980 when Audi introduced the Audi Quattro at the Geneva Motor Show. Torsen center differential

Its role is to distribute engine torque between the front and rear axles dynamically and automatically. Unlike electronically controlled multi-plate clutch systems, the Torsen operates through an ingenious arrangement of worm gears and pinions. It instantly detects the slightest difference in rotational speed (and thus loss of grip) between the two axles. When one axle begins to slip, the Torsen differential proportionally transfers more torque to the axle with the best traction, even before the driver notices.
