What is a power tailgate?

The power tailgate is a motorized system that enables the automatic opening and closing of your car's trunk. Gone are the days of having to manually lift a heavy trunk lid! A simple press of a button on the key fob, the dashboard, or directly on the tailgate is all it takes to operate it. Once reserved for luxury vehicles, this feature is rapidly becoming mainstream and is now found on many SUVs, estates, and MPVs, where its usefulness is most apparent.

How does a power tailgate work?

The mechanism relies on a combination of electronic and mechanical components. Electric struts, which are more robust than traditional gas struts, replace the latter to push the tailgate upwards or pull it downwards. An electric motor provides the necessary power, while an electronic control module manages the entire process. This module receives signals from the various control buttons and drives the motors accordingly. To ensure safety, pressure or optical sensors are integrated. If these sensors detect abnormal resistance, such as an object or a person's hand, the system immediately stops its movement and reverses the motion to prevent any pinching or damage.

Technology goes even further with the "hands-free tailgate" option. Combined with the keyless entry system, it integrates a motion sensor under the rear bumper. When the system detects the key nearby, a simple foot motion under the bumper is enough to trigger the opening or closing of the trunk. This function, sometimes called "Smart Opener" or "Easy Open", represents the pinnacle of comfort and practicality for accessing the luggage compartment.

Availability and cost

The power tailgate is generally offered as an option or included in high-end trim levels (such as Carat, S-Line, GT-Line, etc.) by most major manufacturers such as Peugeot, Renault, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, or Mercedes. Its cost as a individual option generally varies between €500 and €1,000, but it is often bundled into "Comfort Packs" or "Technology Packs" which can reach €2,000 or more, including other equipment such as keyless entry or advanced parking assistance. Although it represents a certain investment, the gain in everyday comfort and the added value it brings to the vehicle make it a highly sought-after and appreciated option on the used car market.
