The ISOFIX (International Standards Organisation FIX) attachment system is an international standard (ISO 13216) that revolutionizes child safety in cars. It was designed to standardize and simplify the installation of child car seats, eliminating the frequent risks of incorrect installation associated with using the seat belt. The principle is simple and robust: two metal rings are securely anchored to the vehicle's structure, generally between the seat cushion and backrest of the rear seats. The compatible child seat is equipped with two rigid latches that lock onto these anchorage points. An audible click and a visual indicator (changing from red to green) confirm that the installation is correct and secure. To counteract rotational forces during an impact, a third anchorage point is essential. This can be a top tether strap, which attaches behind the seat, or a support leg that rests on the floor. What is the ISOFIX mounting system?
ISOFIX is an international standard (ISO 13216) that defines a standardized mounting system for child car seats. Its primary objective is to ensure simple, fast, and above all safe installation by creating a rigid connection between the child seat and the vehicle's actual structure. Before its introduction, the only method was the seatbelt, which was the source of numerous installation errors (twisted belt, insufficient tension, incorrect routing) that could drastically reduce the seat's effectiveness in the event of an accident. ISOFIX eliminates this uncertainty. Concretely, the system consists of two horizontal metal loops, welded to the car's chassis and hidden at the junction of the seat cushion and backrest of the rear seats. They are often indicated by a small ISOFIX tag or logo.
How does an ISOFIX installation work?
Installing an ISOFIX car seat is child's play. The seat is equipped with two retractable metal arms or latches. You simply align them with the vehicle's anchorage points and push them until you hear a distinct 'click'. This audible signal is almost always complemented by a visual indicator on the seat's connectors, changing from red (unlocked) to green (locked). This double confirmation offers unparalleled peace of mind for parents. Once both latches are locked, the seat is securely attached to the car, preventing any lateral movement and ensuring optimal restraint.
The third anchorage point: Top Tether or Support Leg
For perfect safety, the two-point ISOFIX system must imperatively be supplemented by an anti-rotation device. In the event of a frontal impact, the car seat tends to tilt forward. This third anchorage point prevents this dangerous movement. There are two solutions:
The Top Tether:
This is a strap located at the top, on the back of the car seat. It attaches to a specific anchorage point in the vehicle, generally located on the back of the seatback, on the rear parcel shelf, or in the boot floor. This point is identified by an anchor pictogram.
The support leg:
This is a telescopic leg extending from the base of the car seat and resting firmly against the vehicle floor. In addition to its anti-rotation role, it absorbs part of the impact energy by transferring it to the floor. Please note that its use is sometimes incompatible with vehicles equipped with under-floor storage compartments.
ISOFIX vs Seatbelt: What are the advantages?
Road safety studies are clear: ISOFIX is much safer. The main reason is the drastic reduction in the risk of installation error. It is estimated that more than 2 out of 3 seats secured with a seatbelt are incorrectly installed, compared to less than 5% for ISOFIX seats.

Curtain airbags
Curtain airbags, also known as 'curtain airbags' or Inflatable Tubular Structure (ITS), are essential passive safety devices in modern vehicles. Integrated into the headliner (roof lining) above the side windows, they deploy vertically downwards, like a curtain, in the event of a severe side impact or rollover. Their primary objective is to protect the heads of occupants, whether seated in the front or the rear, by creating a protective cushion between their heads and hard interior surfaces, such as windows, door pillars (B-pillar, C-pillar), or external objects. Unlike front or side airbags (which protect the thorax), curtain airbags remain inflated longer (several seconds) to provide continuous protection during multiple impacts or rollovers, and to prevent passenger ejection. Triggered by lateral acceleration sensors and gyroscopes, they are an integral part of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and are a major criterion in safety assessments such as Euro NCAP. Today, they are virtually standard on new cars sold on the French market.
Crumple Zones
Crumple zones are structural elements of a vehicle designed to deform in a controlled manner during an impact. Located at the front and rear of the chassis, these zones act as a giant shock absorber. Their primary role is not to resist the crash, but rather to absorb and dissipate a maximum amount of the kinetic energy generated by the collision. By folding and compacting according to pre-defined patterns engineered by designers, they prolong the duration of the impact, significantly reducing the deceleration forces experienced by the occupants. This ingenious design helps preserve the integrity of the safety cell (the cabin), which is conversely engineered to be as rigid as possible. The use of various high and ultra-high strength steels, combined with advanced computer simulations, makes it possible to define with extreme precision how the structure must react to provide optimal protection. It is a fundamental pillar of modern automotive passive safety, invisible yet essential.
3-point seatbelts
The 3-point seatbelt is the most fundamental and effective passive safety feature in a modern vehicle. Invented in 1959 by Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin, it is now a mandatory standard on almost all cars produced worldwide. Its name comes from its three anchor points to the vehicle's structure, which create a diagonal strap (shoulder belt) and a lap strap (waist belt). This ingenious design ensures an optimal distribution of the forces exerted on the body during a crash. The diagonal strap restrains the torso and shoulder, while the lap strap holds the pelvis, thereby directing deceleration forces toward the most robust parts of the human skeleton (the pelvis and ribcage). This system prevents the ejection of the passenger from the cabin, significantly reduces the risk of striking the vehicle's interior (steering wheel, dashboard), and works in perfect synergy with other devices such as airbags and pretensioners. Its effectiveness in saving lives and reducing the severity of injuries in the event of an accident is universally recognized, making it the cornerstone of automotive safety.
Safety Pack
The Safety Pack is a bundle of driver-assistance equipment and technologies (ADAS - Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) grouped together by car manufacturers to improve a vehicle's active and passive safety. Rather than offering these options individually, brands market them as a package, often at a more attractive price. The main objective is to prevent accidents by assisting the driver in critical situations and to reduce the severity of collisions when they are unavoidable. A typical Safety Pack includes features such as automatic emergency braking, which can detect pedestrians and cyclists, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. The content and naming of these packs vary considerably from one manufacturer to another (e.g., Drive Assist Pack, Safety Plus Pack, etc.), but their purpose remains the same: to offer a higher level of protection for the driver, passengers, and other road users. These systems rely on a combination of sensors, radars, and cameras to continuously analyze the vehicle's surroundings and anticipate potential hazards.
Deactivatable passenger airbag
The deactivatable passenger airbag is an essential safety feature in modern vehicles, designed to allow the temporary neutralization of the front passenger airbag deployment. Its primary function is to ensure the safety of children, particularly infants travelling in a rear-facing child safety seat. Indeed, the deployment force of an airbag, which deploys at over 300 km/h, can cause severe or even fatal injuries to a child whose seat is positioned in the front. The deactivation system generally takes the form of a key switch, located in the glove box or on the side of the passenger-side dashboard. On newer models, this control may be integrated into the infotainment system via the touchscreen. Once the airbag is deactivated, an indicator light on the dashboard confirms its 'OFF' status. It is imperative to reactivate the airbag as soon as an adult passenger or an older child (facing forward, according to the manufacturer's recommendations) occupies the seat, in order to guarantee optimal protection in the event of a collision. This feature thus offers essential flexibility for families while complying with the strictest safety standards.
