Keyless entry, often referred to as 'Keyless Entry' or 'Keyless Go', is a convenience technology that has revolutionized how we interact with our cars. Gone are the days of fumbling through your pockets or bag for the key, especially in the rain or with your arms full of groceries. This system allows you to unlock your vehicle simply by being in close proximity and touching the door handle. How does the keyless access system work?

The magic of keyless entry relies on radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The key, which can take the form of a card or a compact fob, continuously emits a low-range coded signal. Antennas and sensors concealed in the vehicle's door handles and trunk scan the immediate surroundings.

When you touch the door handle, the vehicle sends an authentication request to the key. If the key is detected within a restricted perimeter (generally one to two meters), it responds with a unique security code. The car's computer verifies this code. If it matches, it commands the doors to unlock. For locking, the process is similar: pressing a dedicated area on the handle or simply walking away from the vehicle is enough to send the closure command. This constant and secure dialogue ensures that only the holder of the correct key can access the vehicle.

Thieves can use two devices to amplify the key's signal (even if it is inside your home) and relay it to the car to trick it and unlock it. To counter this risk, manufacturers integrate motion sensors into the newest keys: if the key remains stationary for a few minutes, it stops transmitting, thus preventing the relay attack. It is also advisable to store your key in an RFID protective case (Faraday box) at home.
