What is central locking?
Central locking, also known as central door locking, is an essential comfort and safety feature on modern automobiles. Its main function is simple yet crucial: allowing the driver to lock or unlock all vehicle doors, as well as the trunk and the fuel filler flap, with a single action. Gone are the days of walking around the car to check every door! Today, a simple turn of the key, a press of a remote control button, or even just the proximity of the key is enough.
How does the central locking system work?
The operation of the central locking system relies on perfect coordination between several electronic and mechanical components:
- The control unit (ECU): This is the brain of the system. It receives the lock or unlock command (from the key cylinder, the remote control, or an interior button) and transmits it to the door locks.
- The actuators (or central locking motors): Located in each door and the trunk, these small electric motors receive the impulse from the control unit and perform the mechanical movement necessary to operate the door latch.
- The trigger: This can be the driver's door lock cylinder, the radio receiver for the remote control, or proximity sensors for keyless entry systems.
